The Jamestown Jets battled hard all night but seen a two goal lead disappear in the third period before falling 4-3 in a shootout.
(Jamestown, NY ) The Jamestown Jets suffered a heart breaking shootout loss to the first place Wooster Oilers on Friday night. Jamestown held a two goal lead in the final 12 minutes but failed to hang on against the high powered Oilers offense. Daniel Dennitton, Nate Hughes and David Moore all scored goals for Jamestown and Chad Karns made 29 saves in goal for the Jets.
Home ice gave the Jets the early spark as they controlled the first four minutes of play with constant pressure in the Wooster zone. The Oilers withstood the early charge of the Jets but Nik Temple took a double minor for checking from behind with less than 14 minutes to play in the period. It took Jamestown some time to get momentum on the power play but eventually Daniel Dennitton one-timed a pass from Jon Gratton by the Oilers goalie Alexander Galayshko.
The physical play intensified in the second half of the period and their two separate altercations and a period that had 32 minutes in penalties. The first bout featured The Oilers Brandon McPhail and Frank Guadagno of the Jets after Oilers forward Scott Brown crashed hard into Jets goalie Chad Karns. Dan Kuenzi and Josh Porter exchanged pleasantries in the second altercation that occurred in the closing minutes of the first frame.
Wooster tied the score midway through the second period with a power play goal that deflected off the leg of Brian Smith. Jamestown thought they regained their one goal lead just over a minute later when it appeared that Gratton had jammed I a loose puck but the referee ruled the puck was covered by Galayshko.
Jamestown would regain the lead with their second power play goal of the contest. Nate Hughes scored his team leading 32nd goal of the season on a wrist shot just under the crossbar on the glove side of Galayshko.
David Moore gave Jamestown a two goal lead on a replay of the Hughes goal. Moore found himself in the slot all alone and waited for Galayshko to go to his knees before wristing the shot by the sprawling netminder. Galayshko robbed Jets forward Joe Rohm of a sure goal just moments earlier but the Jets kept the puck in the zone and it eventually found Moore in the slot.
The Wooster Oilers proved why they are in first place and the top scoring team in the league in the third period. They mounted a ferocious attack on the Jets and Kevin Techmja pulled the Oilers within one near the halfway point. The Oilers forced Alex Stahl to give away the puck and Techmja took the puck and lifted a shot just under the crossbar on the short side.
The Jets tried desperately to hang on to their one goal lead and withstood three Oilers power plays in the first 12 minutes. With five minutes left the Oilers were awarded a penalty shot after Derek MacNeil threw his stick at an Oilers player that was in on a breakaway. Curtis Megginson took the shot for Wooster but Karns made the save to maintain the Jets one goal lead.
The Jets battled through more adversity when Frank Guadagno was sent to the box with just under three minutes left in the game. They killed off the power play but Techmja scored his second of the game with just 32.2 seconds left in the game.
Brandon McPhail and Scott Brown scored in the shootout and the Jets failed to beat Galayshko in four tries sending the Jets home with just one point.
The same two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 7:35 p.m. at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena. Good seats are still available or you can follow the action at www.jamestownjets.com.
