(Jamestown, NY)Seven teams, including Team Ulysse from the province of Quebec and a team from Russia, converged on the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena this weekend as the Jets hosted the College Showcase for the second consecutive season. The Jets had a 1-2 record with a 6-3 loss to Team Ulysse on Friday night and a 5-2 loss against the Russian Select team on Saturday night. They completed the weekend with an impressive win against the Philadelphia Thunder.
The loss to Team Ulysse on Friday was a hard fought battle most of the way. Joe Rohm put the Jets on the board first when his shot from the corner deflected off the back of Team Ulysse goalie Anthony Labelle less than two minutes into the game. The teams traded goals in the first and the score was 2-2 after one period. The teams traded chances in the second period but Team Ulysse scored three goals in the final four minutes and the Jets were unable to come back.
Saturday night was a game that featured two teams that did not know a lot about each other. Neither team took control early but the Russian Select team capitalized on a power play to take the early lead. Jamestown scored next on a fluke goal from center ice by David Moore but the Russian team quickly answered back. The Jets had chances to get back in the game but Russian goalie Alexander Shishkin was superb after replacing Grigory Matsyukov who was injured in the second period.
After two hard fought losses the Jets played with a purpose on Sunday afternoon against the Philadelphia Thunder. Jamestown jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but Philadelphia scored two late goals to send the teams to the locker room tied at two. Unlike Friday night, the Jets would not be denied in this game. Nate Hughes led the way with a hat trick and Adam Kesser and Alex Stahl each had a pair of goals in the Jamestown victory.
The Jets continue their Northern Junior Hockey League schedule this weekend as they head on the road to take on the first place Wooster Oilers. The teams will faceoff at 7 p.m. on Saturday night and 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon with both games broadcast at www.woosteroilers.com.
