Victory Moves Jets Two Points Behind Bruins

2009-12-12

JOn Gratton scored two power play goals and Lorne Shotwell made 29 saves as the Jets beat the Troy Bruins. The Victory moved the Jets withing two points of the second Place Bruins.

(Jamestown, NY)     Jon Gratton scored two power play goals and Lorne Shotwell made 29 saves to lead the Jamestown Jets to a 4-1 victory over the Troy Bruins. The Jets broke the game open with three second period goals to break a 1-1 first period tie.  Jon Cirone and Dan Igielinski also scored goals for the Jets.

The Jets knew they needed a fast start to build off the momentum of their come from behind victory over the Wooster Oilers last weekend. They used an early power play to help build that momentum and outshot the Bruins 11-0 in the first half of the opening period. The Jets had the early momentum but Bruins goalie Chad Karns was magnificent in the early going and kept Jamestown off the board.

It was the Bruins that would strike first with a power play goal late in the period.  David Moore took a boarding penalty with Jon Cirone already in the box for roughing to give Troy a two man advantage. Lee McClure wasted no time scoring on a wrist shot from the point just 15 seconds after the minor to Moore. Jamestown killed the remainder of the minor to Moore and finally beat Karns in the final minute of the period. Igielinski accepted a pass from Moore on a perfectly executed 2-on-1 and slid the puck through Karns legs.

It was a slow start to the second period as both teams played tentatively, hoping the other team would make the first mistake. It was no mistake when Jon Cirone put the Jets ahead on a shorthanded goal that he lifted just under the crossbar. It was just about two minutes later when Jon Gratton tipped a shot from the point to give the Jets a 3-1 lead. Gratton put the Jets ahead 4-1 later in the period with his second power play goal of the period.

The Jets preserved their victory by playing defense and killing off a five minute Troy power play at the end of the second and beginning of the third period. The Jets relentless penalty killing seemed to deflate the Bruins attack and allowed Jamestown to limit their offensive chances in the third period.

The Jamestown Jets will be action at 12 p.m. Sunday as they complete their weekend series with the Troy Bruins. Good seats still remain for the rare Sunday matinee. Tickets are available at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena and by visiting www.jamestownjets.com
