Jets Unbelievable Comeback Stuns Oilers

2009-12-07

Jets rally from being down 6-0 to win late.

Wooster, OH.  Last season the Jets learned all too well that the regular season really doesn’t mean much it’s who’s left standing in the end that counts.  In order to be the best you have to find ways to beat the top teams and heading into this past weeks games with the Wooster Oilers the Jets were winless in three tries this season and left searching for answers.  On Thursday the Jets  took a big step as they traveled to Wooster holding a 4-3 lead with under 2 minutes to go only to see the Oilers tie it and eventually win it in a shootout however they earned their 1st point against Wooster this season.  Getting that point was huge for the Jets but it still wasn’t that quality victory they were after.  So on Sunday the Jets would travel to Wooster again hungry to avenge Thursday’s loss.  As the game started however it was Wooster that came out hungry scoring early and often eventually chasing starting net minder Ethan Adamczyk as the Jets were trailing 4-0.  Even replacement Lorne Shotwell couldn’t stop the bleeding right away and as the 1st period ended a stunted Jets squad headed to the locker room shaking their heads wondering what just happened down 6-0.  The answered was simple the Jets were caught standing around watching the game rather than being the aggressor and sticking to what works and that’s blue collar hard working hockey.  As unbelievable as the first period was what would happen next would prove to be even more incredible.  Frustrated and with nothing to lose the Jets sat their top lines and went to their bench and got a super human effort from their 4th line.  Rookie Matt Sullivan recorded the first point of his career as he raced for a loose puck threw it in front to #21 Pete Sisson who fed #61 Brandon Renckens who banged in a garbage goal in front at 17:55 of the 2nd.  This would give the beleaguered Jets life as they would score twice more in the next 2 minutes on goals from #16 Joe Rohm and #20 Ryan Cunningham cutting the lead to 6-3.  Lorne Shotwell stood tall all second period controlling his rebounds and holding the Jets in the game and at the 7:24 mark of the 2nd period #14 David Moore would cut the Oilers lead to 6-4 as he blistered a shot past Wobster eventually forcing Coach Hart to change net minders.  Controlling the momentum the Jets headed to the locker room for the second intermission only down by 2 goals.  The sentiment in the locker room was simple good teams find ways to win no matter what and the best players show up in big games.  Jets forward Jon Gratton did just that scoring back to back 3rd period goals to tie the game 6-6 and with 2:52 left the Captain #75 Dan Igielinski riffled a shot past a stunned oilers net minder scoring the winner.  Moments later #15 Bruce Statton would ice the game with an empty net goal  giving the Jets an improbable 8-6 victory.  “This was a gutsy win for us Shotwell was the difference…it wasn’t pretty but the guys responded I’m very proud of them.  Give Wooster credit they played a lot of hockey this weekend it’s always a battle with our respective clubs.” Said Jets Coach Dennis Canfield.   The Jets return home this Saturday night @ 7:35 PM as they host the Troy Bruins for the first time ever this is a special evening as the Jets will honor the Southwestern Trojans and Randolph Cardinals on their NYS High School Football Championships along with the Connelly Cup Nominees which is awarded to WNY’s top High School Football Player.  For more information visit www.jamestownjets.com.  Tickets $5 and $7.
