Jets never got off the ground...Ulysse sweeps weekend
Montreal, Quebec. The Jets traveled north of the border to Montreal this past weekend to take on Team Ulysse. Earlier this season the Jets took 2 of 3 games from Ulysse at the Jamestown Arena including a late rally in the 3rd period on Friday and a shootout victory on Sunday. Heading into the weekends games the Jets were riding a 4 game winning streak their longest of the season while Ulysse was coming of back to back losses to the USA U-18 National Champion Little Caesars team. The Jets practiced Thursday afternoon had a team meal and traveled through the night and arrived several hours prior to the 1pm face-off on Friday. Unfortunately the Jets legs never made it across the border and they were out worked and overmatched all game and dropped the opener 9-1 the lone goal came in the 3rd off the stick of leading scorer Jon Gratton. The only bright spot was the play of Jets net minder Ethan Adamczyk who was steady and often brilliant as he turned aside 60 Ulysee shots and held the Jets in the game until late as the Jets only trailed 4-0 after the 2nd. “Ethan works incredibly hard and we didn’t give him any support all the scouts were impressed with his effort” said coach Canfield. Saturday the Jets played in front of a packed house including many scouts from all over the Quebec Major Junior League and they came with a solid effort. Jon Cirone got the Jets on the board with his first goal of the season short handed as he raced for a loose puck and banged it home past the Ulysse net minder for the early lead. The Jets then got into penalty trouble that along with costly turnovers found the Jets trailing 4-1 after the first. In the second the Jets shut down Ulysee for the most part by staying out of the box and playing disciplined and headed into the 3rd trailing 6-1. In the 3rd the young Jets proved to be the difference as the line of Melcher (15), Sullivan(16), and Chai (18) saw the most ice time and generated the most chances. Melcher the youngest player in the league at 15 years of age was the teams best faceoff man winning three straight offensive zone face offs. Their effort was rewarded as all 3 saw time on the power play a spot reserved for veteran players. Seeing the young guys perform inspired the Jets as they played a solid 3rd period getting a great goal from the point off a face off win and blast from captain Rob Marlinski and later another power play goal from Daniel Denitton. The Jets would eventually go down to defeat 8-3 however playing short handed and on the road a lot of positives came from the weekend especially the play of the youngsters. “We need to play within ourselves more and when we do we can beat anyone we showed that in the 3rd we look forward to our next meeting” said Canfield. The Jets will have their chance at redemption as they return to Montreal just prior to Christmas for another pair against their rivals. Looking ahead…this coming weekend the Jets return home to host the Adirondack Predators Friday and Saturday @ 7:35 PM. The Jets defeated Adirondack in their last meeting 4-3 in Albany although Adirondack won the previous 3 meetings. This weekend is “Group Night” with the Jets. Have a group interested in attending?
