Jets Drop Pair to Oilers

2009-10-25

The struggles continued for the Jamestown Jets as they dropped a pair of games to the first place Wooster Oilers. Wooster beat the Jets 7-3 on Friday night in a game that was marred by penalties and they completed the sweep with a 9-5 win on Saturday.

The story of the game on Friday night was special teams.  The Jets held off the Oilers high powered offensive attac for much of the first period, allowing only a power play goal in the first 19 minutes of action. The Oilers finally capitalized in the final minute of the period scoring twice more on the power play to take a 3-0 lead into the locker room.

The Oilers scored again in the early part of the second period to increase their lead to 4-0.  The Jets finally got some offense as Daniel Dennitton and Jon Gratton scored to narrow the gap to 4-2.

That was as close as the Jets would get as Brian Smith scored the Oilers fourth power play goals halfway through the second period.  Wooster added two more in the second period and Bruce Statton scored his first of the season in the final minute of the second.

Saturday night couldn't have started any better for the Jets.  They were able to kill off an early Wooster power play and then Dan Igielinski scored halfway through the period to put Jamestown ahead 1-0.  Less than two minutes later the Oilers Max Rickard beat Jets goalie Ethan Adamczyk to knot the score at one. Despite opportunities at both ends of the rink the teams went to dressing rooms tied 1-1.

Wooster found their offense early in the second and scored four times to go ahead 5-1 just past the halfway point of the period.  David Moore made the score 5-2 with a power play goal that he fired from a strange angle and bounced it off Oilers goalie Tim Gearhart.  Brandon McPhail netted his third goal of the game in the final minute of the period to give the Oilers back their four goal lead.

The teams traded goals in the third period with each team scoring three times.  The Jets goals were scored by Jon Andhor, Derek MacNeil and Dan Igielinski scored his second of the game.

The Jets are now 6-7-0 on the season and are below .500 for the second time this season.  They won't have to wait long to avenge their loss as they head to Wooster next Friday night.
