Never Quit Jets Comeback to Beat Team Ulysee2009-09-19
The Jamestown Jets had one of the most amazing comebacks ever as they erased a five goal third period deficit to beat visiting Team Ulysee 10-7.
Do you believe in Miracles? Yes! Those were the words spoken by Al Michaels when the USA Hockey team beat the heavily favored Russian team in the 1980 Olympics. This wasn't anywhere near as important of a game but the Jamestown comeback was no less exciting.
The Jets spent most of the firts two periods watching Team Ulysee play a near flawless game. Jean-Christopher Houde tipped a rebound past Jets goalie Ethan Adamczyk to give Team Ulysee an early 1-0 goal lead. Team Ulysee took control of the game at that point and if not for some great saves by Adamczyk could have went ahead by five goals.
They did eventually beat Adamczyk again on a goal by Gregory Heroux and Lee Asselin gave Team Ulysee a three goal lead less than a minute later.
The Jets finally got on the board with just under three minutes left in the first period. Joe Coyne scord the goal in his return to the Jamestown lineup.
The second period was almost a mirror image of the first period with Team Ulysee scoring four times to jump out to a 7-2 lead afer 40 minutes.
Trailing by five the Jets came out for the third period and played with a purpose. It was obvious from the start of the period that the team would not quit despite the five goal deficit. Nobody could have predicted what would happen next.
David Moore made the score 7-3 with a power play goal with 11:54 left in the game. Moore netted his second of the game just 15 seconds later which gave the Jets a little hope. Trailing 7-4 on the scoreboard, Jon Grattons beat Team Ulysee goalie Anthony Labelle to make the score 7-5.
With the Jets trailing by only two and over nine minutes to play the crowd started sense that something was happening. The chants of J-E-T-S...JETS...JETS...JETS became louder and more profound and the team seemed to gain even more confidence. Coyne puled the Jets within one just 25 seconds later. That set up the tying goal that came off the stick off Alex Stahl.
The Jets had scored five times in 3:25 to tie the score 7-7 with over eight minutes left in the game. The Jets were determined not to let this comeback go to waist and that was never more evident than when they killed off a Team Ulysee power play in the last seven minutes. Jamestown held the puck for a good portion of the penalty kill and when Team Ulysee did have chances, Adamczyk was there to shut the door.
About one minute after the Jets killed off the Team Ulysee power play, Jon Grattons scored his second of the game to give the Jets the lead at 8-7. Jamestown never looked back and added goals by Jon Andhor and a power play goal by Joe Coyne.
Joe Coyne scored four goals to go along with his two assists in his return to the Jamestown lineup. Defenseman David Moore showed his importance to the team with two goals and Jon Grattons had a pair in the victory. Dan Igielinksi and Nate Hughes both had three assists for Jamestown and Ethan Adamczyk made 40 saves.
The Jets and Team Ulysee will meet again on Saturday night at 7:35 PM. There are still good tickets remaining by visiting the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena box office.
